4 Effective Tips for Beating the Resume Bots

According to JobScan at least 98.2% of Fortune 500 companies are utilising some sort of resume bots for their hiring process. Resume bots identify candidates who are not qualified for the jobs and eliminate them from the large pool of applicants. Once your qualifications don’t meet the robot’s requirements, you’ll be out of the running before a recruiter or a hiring manager even sees your resume.

Fortunately, there are several ways to help you optimise your curriculum vitae and increase your chances of being selected by the bot.

1. Choose the right file type

PDF files do not always work with resume bots. So instead of uploading your resume as a PDF or large image file, it is best to save it as a simple, plain text document. While PDFs are best in keeping every detail intact, Word files are most accurately read by most resume bots.

2. Utilise the right keywords

Keywords are the best, most effective way to beat the resume bots. Thus, it is best to include proper keywords to match the job descriptions you’re applying for. Try to include a specific job title or even some skills connected to that certain position. Think about how and when you need to mention these keywords. Most resume bots identify the strength of your qualifications based on the number of times you’ve mentioned those keywords.

3. Stick to a simple, concise format

Make sure to use a simple and standard layout when creating your resume. The best way to do it is to present your work experience and job history in reverse-chronological order. Most resume bots can only read text so keep images and charts off your resume entirely even when you’re applying for a graphic or creative design position. Furthermore, try to use standard bullet points to highlight the most essential factors in your resume.

4. Do not include headers and footers

Most people prefer to put their contact information either on the header or the footer of their resume. While doing this is no doubt visually appealing, most resume bots do not pay much attention to these sections. To ensure that all details are seen and read by the bot, include all crucial information in the body of your document.
